The process of getting customers to your site normally involves your winning a place on the first page of a web search that your would-be client sees when he searches for your product.

There are waves of changes that happen to the web constantly. We are passed the old static websites that were not as friendly as they are today (considering this was only a few years ago). If we neglect proper research, your web design/development campaign will not go anywhere. I will explain many important factors that I go through in order to get indexed correctly by major search engines.

In the beginning

Something that almost everyone misses is proper web marketing research that is neglected and should be the first step of any project. Lets not forget the 4 P's:

1. Product - Physical product, service and ideas
2. Price - What customers or users pay
3. Place - Place or distribution channels
4. Promotion - Advertising, selling process and sales

Once you have thoroughly researched your 4 P's it is time to consider domain names and branding. This doesn't simply mean one domain name serves all. Try registering multiple domains with different hosting companies. The reason is Google may consider multiple similar sites on the same server as duplicate sites. Consider the class C block of an IP, which is the number shown in the third position of an IP address. It doesn't hurt to be on other servers. This is more work but well worth the effort.

Your next step is creating Microsites. Try hiring a professional for this or if you don't have the budget, try buying a template. A microsite should be short-lived with 6-7 pages. Make sure you add Google analytics and track your efforts. The content on a microsite should be short and sweet. Don't forget your call to action and a link back to your main site for popularity and credibility with Google, Bing or Yahoo. It also doesn't hurt to have an AdWords campaign to drive relevant traffic to the site.

Onsite SEO

As most of you know onsite SEO is a huge factor to consider when creating any website. Yet again, proper research will be needed in order to reel in your target market through keyword research. You want to create two documents (excel or word) that have 25-50 primary and secondary keywords. Number them all by importance so that when you create a website, placement will not be an issue. Here are three factors to consider with keywords after your research is complete:

1. Keyword Placement - Where on the page keywords are located
2. Keyword Prominence - How early or high up keywords are placed
3. Keyword Density - The number of times keywords divided by a total number of words on the page

Where to use Keywords

• Title - Title tag
• Headings - H1 and H2 tags
• Link (anchor) text - Text that is inside and anchor tag
• First paragraph - especially the first 2 sentences
• Last paragraph - especially the first 2 sentences
• Drop down boxes - Use forms that are keyword research
• URL's - The actual link should have keywords in it as well
• Folder and file names - keywords/keywords.html
• Image ALT tags - alt="keywords"
• Navigation - Very important to use keywords here (ie. T-shirts instead of Products)

What Google looks for

• Keywords used in link text
• Keywords used in the URL/subdomains/folders of your site
• Keywords used in your and
• External links linking in * explained more further down
• At least 200 words of relevant text
• How often the content is updated
• How fast your obtaining new links
• How old the site is

Link exchange or Reciprocal linking

Getting other sites to link to you is always good but there are some points to consider before getting these links and they are:

1. Exchange links with only relevant sites
2. Try to get links with high PageRank or trusted sites (BBB, dMoz etc....)
3. Your best links will be from sites that have large number of links coming in and have a small number of links going out
4. Try to get links close to their home page

End-to-End SEO Checklist

• Determine the best primary and secondary keywords phrases for your site
• Create content-rich pages
• Optimize each page for its best keywords phrases
• Link each page from your sitemap page, and from each page back to your home page
• Submit to directories
• Setup and maintain link-building and exchange
• Regularly monitor your progress and modify your efforts

And DO NOT list for SEO

• Don't use redirects on your site
• No doorway pages
• Don't repeat keywords over and over
• Don't use hidden text on your site
• Don't use tiny text on your site
• Don't use frames
• No hidden image links
• Don't use elaborate image maps
• Absolutely no proprietary third party domain names
• No link farms
• And don't get links from sites that are not credible or irrelevant

This might sound like a lot of work but I assure you that it will pay off in the long run. And remember that the web is literally taking over marketing and an SEO campaign should be a top priority for all organizations.

It's my opinion that Google works much better for you if you use this method, as they follow the link back from the reciprocal site to your own, and if you have enough of them, the search engine will assume that you are important and rank you accordingly.

By far the best way of building up non reciprocal back-links to your site is by writing an article and submitting it to an article site with a good page rank. There are several of these, but the best is EzineArticles which has a 6 page-rank. By writing a simple four hundred word article on one of these sites, Google will follow the link from the Author's resource box back to your Web-page and will then include your site in the index.

Search Engine Marketing, also referred to as SEM, is the act of purchasing online advertising that offers you the ability to instantly increase your visibility with the search engines when customers search for specific keywords.
Referred to as S.E.M., search engine marketing is the active process of creating an advertising campaign with the search engines and targeting specific keywords that customer may use when searching for the goods/services offered by your business. Google, Bing, Yahoo, all of the major search engines offer some form of SEM, typically in the format of what is referred to as pay-per-click (PPC). PPC is simply an advertising campaign set up and managed by an individual to target specific keywords.
A PPC campaign is very easy to set up and manage. You simply create an account, with the search engine of your choice, then register for a new campaign. With Google, for example, it is called AdWords. Within your campaign, you can select the specific phrases of keywords that you would like to target, as well as the geographic region. You place a 'bid' amount for these keywords. When a customer, who meets your search criteria, receives the displayed results they can choose to click on your ad or not. When your ad appears that is called an impression. If someone clicks on your ad then your account will be deducted for your bid amount.
For example, if you choose to target the keyword 'search engine optimization' and you bid $0.50 per click then each time you ad appears and is 'clicked' by a customer they will be taken to the website or webpage you have determined and your account will be debited the amount of your bid.
You can also set up a daily budget. When you 'clicks' reach this limit your ads will no longer be displayed. You can also control the specific days and times your ads will appear. You have total control over the criteria used to target your customers. SEM is a great way to get your name out there quickly and drive traffic to your website.
I will use will be "fish food" example once again. If your company wishes to sell fish food online then potential customers need to be able to find your website. If they find your site they may purchase the fish food from your company. If you have a PPC campaign set up and managed properly then customers will be shown a top-link to your website when they search for "fish food". If the customer chooses to click on the link to your site you are then invoiced a pre-determined amount (many times this amount is measured in cents, not dollars). Now you have been charged a fee to get this customer to your site. When they arrive at your site and find it to their liking they may purchase your gourmet fish food and not the other fish food offered by your competition.
The PPC campaign can be set to only reach customers in your local area, or nationally, or even world-wide depending on your desired service area. The key to a successful PPC campaign is knowing what keywords to target in order to lead qualified customers to your site. If your keywords are too generic then you will get traffic but it may not be quality traffic. The ideal customer is one who is ready, willing, and able to make a purchase. The way a customer searches can determine some of these factors.
There are other venues such as Facebook, for example, where companies may also advertise. Find the sites that your customers visit and put yourself in front of them. It is that simple!

What Is SEO and Why Is It So Important?

For those of you that don't know what SEO is, it means Search Engine Optimization. SEO is a huge subject and endless hours, days, weeks, months could be spent discussing it and the best way to go about it. What SEO really means for your business is free traffic, which is of course something that we all love and want more of.
Search engine optimization is basically about working out how Google (or whatever other search engine) rank your site in their search results. For example if your website was "dogtrainer.com" then your most likely 'keyword' would be dog training or similar. So to 'optimize' your site for the search engines you would be targeting the 'keyword' dog training. If you did this effectively, you would rank on the first page of google when someone searches 'dog training' in what are called the 'organic' results.
What's the difference between the organic results and the non-organic?
Non-organic:
Basically, non organic results are paid for, so if you go and do a Google search for 'dog training' (to stick with the earlier example for ease of understanding) when the search is complete and your have your results look at the page you have been presented with. At the top of the page, just under the search bar, you will have a box which is lightly coloured and says 'ads' in the top right corner; you should also see this on the right hand side. These are the 'non-organic' results. The reason that they are non-organic is because someone is paying google to have that advert displayed there for that keyword.
Organic:
Organic results are pretty much just results that people do not pay to have there. So if you look at the 'dog training' example again and look at the results below the 'ads' at the top of the page then these are your organic results. These are sites that Google displays there for free because they are relevant to the keyword that the user is searching for.
So, hopefully that has made the difference between the organic and non-organic search results obvious. Now you can see why we want our site to rank for in the organic search results in Google, or other search engines that work in the same way. This is what SEO is all about and why it is so important, where others are paying for the same amount of people to see their site, you get it free. If you optimize your site properly. By definition a "do follow" backlink is a link that the search engine robots can follow from the blog back to your site. 5 Things to Remember for Ranking in Google Local Results

This started when I was investigating the different rankings between Google.com and Google.co.uk that some people experience. Interesting stuff. There can be quite some difference in how your site ranks for each of these search engines and the trick is to optimise for whichever one you want to rank in.
If your site serves the UK, then you'll want it to rank well in the local search engine, Google.co.uk. In order to do this, you'll need to work your back links, locally.

1. Geo-targeting

Firstly, if you use Webmaster Tools (a must for any website owner) the geo-targeting should be set for your local country. In my case, for the UK. That's a start but by no means the only method Google uses to determine what country your website serves.

2. Domain suffix

It's important to note, however, that the domain suffix is not something Google pays a lot of attention to. Many sites today can have a.com suffix but serve UK or any other country in the world so having a.co.uk suffix is not going to make a difference.

3. Backlinks servers location

Another important thing to consider is that in order to place you in rankings for a particular country SERPS, Google also looks to the country of location your site and any linking to you is hosted, not for everything, but it does have a bearing. For instance, if you need to rank in UK searches it's best to both have your website server located in the UK and have websites linking to you also hosted in the UK. I discovered this quite by accident when I saw great rankings on Google.com over Google.co.uk. I'm now having to relook at my backlinks so that I get better rankings on Google.co.uk instead of.com.

It's therefore important where your backlinks come from. If the majority of your backlinks are sites hosted on german servers, then Google will make an assumption that Germany is the country your site serves. So, in order to rank highly on Google.co.uk specifically, you'll need to gain backlinks from sites hosted in the UK.
I used Yahoo Site Explorer to display a list of my current backlinks. It's easy to then download the list of inlinks and check each one for server host location. I found a handy little tool that does this easily. This IP address checking tool from selfseo, will display the country the server is located in. On doing this for my own site, I discovered that less than half of my inlinks were from servers located in the UK. The rest were from sites located all over the world. My theory is that whilst Google can't determine a main country of service, by default it applies the overall link equity to Google.com, the more global of the SERPS.

This can be very revealing so I recommend anyone to try this. Obviously, if you've got loads of inlinks, this can take a while so the best method is to target UK hosted sites in the first place and make it part of your link building strategy.

4 Criteria for sourcing backlinks

Make a checklist of relevant criteria to help you source good backlinks, such as;
Common or related content or focus

This is so 'valid' traffic can flow. There's no point putting a link on a site about pensions if your own site is about childrens toys. You just won't get qualified traffic.

High page rank

Pages with higher page rank have more 'weight' or authority, so having links from pages with a high page rank are more desirable, but make sure you check the actual page rank of the page that will or does link to you as this can be quite different from the home page. Sometimes the actual linking page can have little or no weight at all.

Don't rule out new sites that appear to have low or no page rank. This likely means they are still growing. If you get a link here, your link equity will grow as they do. The higher the page rank, the harder it is likely to be to get a link with them so doing it early in their own website lifespan will serve you well.

Do follow

Many sites use a 'nofollow' tag to stop any valuable link equity they've worked hard for, leaking out in the form of outbound links. Look to engage sites that are dofollow where some of their authority and page rank will flow your way. Its easy to check this. Just navigate to the linking page and then view source from your browser options. Then do a 'find' for 'nofollow'.

Server location

This was covered in point 3.
There are many more elements of criteria you may wish to include but these are probably the most important.

5 Check your competitors

Use of the Yahoo Site Explorer tool can also be used to check up on competitors ranking ahead of you and see how they get their backlinks and page rank. See if any of the sites linking to them are ones you could also try getting a link from, especially if they meet your checklist criteria as covered in point 4.

They don't review your site and they claim they have reviewed it.

2) Ignore those who don't report your site pros and cons:

If that SEO who claims has reviewed your site, should be able to see the positives and negatives about your site. Simply ignore those who are simply saying they have visited but report you nothing in return. In fact those who have done research would submit their researched report. You should know what is good on your website and what is that requires to get improved. Logically your hired SEO would give you all the changes that needs to be implemented and he shall also include its positive effects as well.

3) Ignore those who don't give you a fixed quote:

Ask for a price. If they say, we need to see and quote you later. Don't agree to pay anything for reviewing and quoting. Go for a detailed proposal. Unless they don't report you in detail, don't hire them. Check on what they are offering and what they are charging. A fixed quote with proper SEO proposal is required before you agree to anything.

4) Ignore those who don't give you estimated achievements:

KPI (Key Performance Indicators) has to be decided in advance. That's what you pay for. If the results are not achieved, your investment goes wasted. You get nothing in return. There is no point hiring that SEO who can't even promise you estimated results.

5) Ignore those who are at distant:

I don't mean necessarily you should ignore. But when you have options available locally, why hire an offshore SEO for this job. Increase more employment. Be a country man. Honestly, dealing with local is more enjoyable than dealing with an unknown offshore SEO guy. Try hiring local SEO for your SEO services. If you don't find SEO locally, at least try to find someone who is based within the country. Mostly, you will find some who works at your rate and fit within your budget. Language barrier will of course be there all the time as mostly they are poor in communicating in English.

6) Ignore those who don't show you their previous success:

Ask for previous examples where they have been successful. You need to hire a professional and experienced SEO for your site. If he has performed well, he doesn't need to approach you. He would get more referring clients on its own.

7) Ignore those who didn't perform on their own website:

Check what they have got for their own website. Did they really do well for their own site? If not, you can also ignore them. You cannot trust anyone who is unable to perform on its own website. Ask the list of keywords they have targeted for their own website. Verify them. In this case, I would even insist to hire an offshore SEO company if they did well doing SEO for their own website.

As many of you already know, your website's content will either benefit or hinder your SEO strategy. This is true no matter what kind of website you run; whether it is for a product, service, or for yourself. Either way, I'm sure you've heard it before, your content is king! The issue is, most people don't understand how to develop content that satisfies both their readers and their page rankings too. It is a difficult balancing act; one that is not easily accomplished.

But I'm here to help; I'm going to walk you through how to create the best search engine optimized content, not only to help you gain traffic, but to help you retain visitors as well. I mentioned earlier that in order to do this it requires a balancing act on your part. What you will be balancing is the quality versus the quantity of the content you will be producing. Let me explain...

THE BALANCING ACT

Content is judged differently depending on whom, or what, is viewing it. A user, or a person, will judge it based on how much personal satisfaction they derived from it. A search engine, like Google or Bing, will judge it based on a less personal assessment. There are three major factors when talking about how a search engine will judge your content; they are your content's keywords, its length and how often it's updated. Therefore, in order to create an effective article, you must take all four of these elements into account equally and without biased (the reader's satisfaction, your content's keywords, your content's length and how often it's updated). It seems easy, I know, but there are some important steps to follow if you want to guarantee your content's legitimacy.

THE STEPS

STEP I: Write you content with your website's main theme in mind. You always want to relate the ideas presented in your article to the ideas presented in your main Meta description.

STEP II: Your content is always written for the reader first and the search engines second. This is because without your visitors' support, no matter where you are in the search engine page rankings, your online business will never be successful. But remember, it's a balancing act.

STEP III: Your article's length can be determined by what it is you are writing about and how much information you are trying to get across. Again, thinking about writing for your readers first, the length you choose must be in correlation with what you believe your readers' attention spans will be. Sometimes, like when writing a blurb for an advertisement, you want to be short and sweet. On the contrary, if you're writing something for in-depth analysis, you might want to use more words. It all depends on what you think will work best.

STEP IV: When developing content for your readers, you want to make sure you have an interesting voice; something that sounds lyrically appealing. Obviously, this trait corresponds with all good writers and takes a certain amount of skill to pull off. Not only that, but something that sounds good to you might not sound that good to someone else. It's a good idea to read your content out loud and to others as a test run of sorts. This allows you to absorb their input and make any necessary corrections before you let your visitors see it.

STEP V: Using keywords is no doubt the hardest part of writing an effective article. This requires you to combine your interesting voice with certain keywords that will help search engines categorize your website. This does not mean cramming the same word a hundred times into an article just so search engines notice it, but rather using synonyms of that word and placing it discretely within your content. This is where the idea of 'quality versus quantity' really comes into effect. By cramming too many of the same word into your content you're successfully decreasing quality and upping quantity. By not using enough keywords just the opposite happens; quality increases while quantity decreases. Follow these few rules and you'll never find yourself uncertain about how much is too much ever again.

1. Use the Google AdWords Tool to determine what keywords you want to use.

2. Use the majority of your keywords near the beginning of your article; preferably within the first paragraph.

3. A good rule of thumb is to calculate how often your keywords are used; anywhere between 2-4% of your article should be dedicated to your keywords.

4. Using synonyms allows you to place more keywords into your content without sounding repetitive.
5. Remember, you are writing for your audience first! Meaning, no matter what you do with your keywords, make sure your content is relevant and comprehensible.

STEP VI: Updating your content frequently forces search engine 'robots' to crawl your site more often and, as a result, improve your page rankings. Updating doesn't necessarily mean adding a sentence or two to an article; it means updating your website on a whole. So, whether that is adding some new media, articles, pages or whatever, it doesn't matter. As long as updates are being made, the search engine 'robots' will have to crawl more often.

In conclusion, when writing SEO content for your website, there will always be a balancing act between quality versus quantity and writing for your readers versus writing for search engines. Knowing how to make the right compromises in order to achieve perfect SEO harmony takes practice, but by following the guidelines I have set forth I hope I can make the process a little easier.

I completely deny the comments done by some of the web developers that all the great and effective domain names are already booked. Search engine optimization does not depend only on the domain names factor. For me, it was never an issue when choosing a domain name for my clients' business websites.

It is a fact, that all the 3 and 4 letters domains with popular extensions have been booked. Also, I completely agree that most of the relevant domains choices are no longer available; however the choosing of a domain name for your business website is certainly possible if you stay flexible.

The value of a website address is defined on how easy it is to spell and remember. There are two types of visitors that visits to your site, humans and search engines. For a human, it is necessary to choose a most simple and easy to remember name for your site, whereas the search engines robots don't care at all.
Using terms such as greatest and best are the keywords which has some disadvantages and / are penalized by search engines. Everyone knows that search engine algorithms changes often and likewise that theory, you may not be penalized for using such terms. However, if you notice the human visitors gets more attracted towards terms like cheap and free. My personal recommendation would be avoiding adjectives in the domain name for your small commercial business website.

Many times, some customers approaching to redesign their website surprises me that some of the basic factors are overlooked when choosing a site name. For example, a commercial website should never choose a dot ORG domain extension, just because the dot Com domain was unavailable. This was the case with the customer who wanted to redesign his existing website. A few factors should be seriously considered especially if its your first online website.

Here are the four mostly and widely used domain extensions and its purposes:

Hence, we found a relevant name available using their company initials with a target keyword. Despite my recommendation, they kept their website as it is and just changed the theme.

The domain you choose might not be important for search engine optimization, however the length of the registration may be significant. My suggestion would be to register a domain name for at least 2 years, and if you are economically strong you may also register it for 5 to 10 years depending on your choice. A fact that, search engines consider that the registration period reflects your commitment to be online for a long term, so many of the businesses register their domain names for more than 5 years.

You can get a dot Com name if you want, as well as register other available extensions for the same site address. Despite the fact that all the short domain names are already taken, you can still find a good site name by researching a little bit.

Recently I've been noticing an increase in emails from 'SEO Companies' that claim to be able to get me to the top spot for my keywords (even though they don't know what they are). The last one was written in bright pink bold text but despite its colourful nature it still ended up being deleted just like all the rest.

Why?

Because they are a con - pure and simple.

Don't believe the hype

All these unsolicited emails have one thing in common - they make exaggerated claims about their SEO abilities. Normally they'll contain the claim that they can get you better results than your existing SEO company for a fraction of the cost. A common lure and one that's normally untrue.

Many of these companies employ 'black hat' techniques that will get you a slap over the wrists by Google (if you're lucky, if not you could end up with a hefty penalty and disappear forever). Some will take your money and not do a thing

Who do you normally send emails to?

How is PageRank checked?

Actually I should have titled this post "Top 5 Proven Ways To Double Your Blog Traffic Every Month" because that's what the potential is. Well, obviously up to a point. At any rate, if you want more traffic to your blog (and honestly who doesn't?) here is an easy strategy that any blogger can use.

1. Content:

This is the most important and admittedly the toughest. (The rest, however, are real easy) You can have the best blog in the world and if no one finds it, no one reads it. By the same token, if you have the worst blog it doesn't matter how many people find it. They will never come back.

As I see it though, there are two problems us bloggers face. First, we all love our own writing. As far as we are concerned our content is always spectacular. The other thing is that most of us sit at home, write some great stuff and then push the "publish" button. We don't have a reliable, objective critic that we trust nearby.

There is, however, a way of looking at the cold hard truth. Take a look at your site analytics and pay close attention to the "bounce rate" and "pages sent". If you happen to write a super headline that attracts a lot of hits, but they only stay for two seconds and don't upload any other pages, there might be a content problem?

2. Consistency:

Do you remember the movie "Julie and Julia"? Julie Powell decided to cook every recipe in one of Julia Childs' cook books. Julie Powell also decided to document her progress every day in her blog. How successful would her blog have been if she had posted one recipe and then quit? Or if, say, she posted one recipe every 2 months? Even though she had never blogged before, she happened to hit on the top two most important factors for blogging success. She had content and consistency. People enjoyed her writing and knew when and where to find it.

So does this mean that we need to blog every day? Probably not. But we do need to be consistent. One of my favorite TV shows is Swamp People. Consistency is the key. If you only want to blog once a week make sure your post is at least always on the same day at about the same time.

I have a friend that owns a successful landscaping business in Florida. His business comes from two sources, referrals and fliers. He can't control the referrals, other than he is reliable with his work and does a good job (consistency and content?), but he can control the fliers. As bloggers, we also have the ability to pass out fliers. We call them comments.

When you post a comment on another persons blog two things happen. You get to include a URL to your own blog and people have the opportunity to get a glimpse of your writing. It's just like passing out a flier.

Obviously you need to be a little bit smart about what blogs you comment on though. If you write a cooking blog it might not be the best thing to be posting comments on blogs about how to buy a used car. Look for blogs that have the same audience as you.

And what about comments other people make to you? Do these help you? YES! When someone posts a comment on your blog it shows up as current content. Search engines just love current content. So you see, posting comments helps both bloggers. It's win win for everyone.

4. Social Media:

When you are not passing out fliers, aka comments, you should be using the social media. Facebook and Twitter are a good place to start. In addition to my own Facebook page, I have friends with thousands of followers that allow me to post links on their page to my blog. Spend some time every day growing your social media contacts.

5. Key Words:

Last and maybe least, but still important, are key words. When you write a title for your blog try to keep key words in mind. This is, after all, how your readers find you via the search engines. Try to put yourself in the mind of your reader. If you were looking for information on a certain topic what words would you use in your search? Include these words in your title and, if you can, repeat them again near the bottom of your blog. This forces the search engine to pull through your entire article and brings you up a little higher in the search.

Look for phrases that have a high level of search activity, while the level of competitiveness is relatively low. For making your final selection of 15-20 keyword phrases you will want to do a Google search on the keyword phrases and check the top 5-10 articles listed for that keyword. Are the articles there well written? Can you deliver a better article? If so then you have a very good chance to move your article into that page rank. It may be very well worth going for.

In conclusion I would like to say that the number of backlinks that your competitors have to their article will also play a big part on if you will go for that SE position.
